Of all the quirky and exciting businesses in NuLu, the name that’s sure to stop you in your tracks is Nanny Goat Books, but such a unique business definitely deserves an equally unique name. Nanny Goat isn’t just a place to grab the latest best-seller, it’s a space for “providing stories, culture, and access to the arts within our community,” Nanny Goat co-owner, Sarah Gardiner says.

After living in Washington D.C., Sarah was inspired by the “literary hubs” she experienced there, and she wanted to find a place to spread that same energy back in the Louisville community. Along with her co-owner, Georgia Connally, Sarah decided to open her unique shop in the thriving NuLu area. “As a neighborhood without a community bookstore, NuLu was the perfect place to settle,” Sarah says. “Since then, Nanny Goat Books has become NuLu's favorite place to grab a book, hear open mic poetry, and find a literary home.”

One of the best things about Nanny Goat, is that when you make a purchase at their store, you’re not just helping a small business, you’re also giving back to artists in your community as well as minority authors. Nanny Goat features books from local, BIPOC, and queer authors in fact, those are some of their most popular products! “We support local authors and artists,” Sarah says. “We have a diverse and inclusive selection, and we focus on products and stories that other stores don't offer.”

Supporting Nanny Goat also means making a contribution to a business that actively shows love and contributes to philanthropic causes in their community. As a queer-owned business, Nanny Goat loves to host fundraising events with Queer Kentucky to help local minority communities. Sarah and Georgia also foster a genuine love for promoting literacy across Kentucky. “Any day that we get to give a child a book is a special day as well,” Sarah says. “In general, helping people find their next favorite read is what gives us joy.”

That love for their community also extends to their customers, both new and loyal. “The connections we build with our customers and the kind, caring, personal service we offer are what keep customers coming back,” Sarah says. “My favorite stories are from the regulars who we have developed long standing relationships with.”

Nanny Goat is happy to serve customers during COVID with individual, personal shopping appointments, so whether you’re looking for that latest best-seller or a unique collectible, be sure to check out Nanny Goat to support an incredible small business!
