A BRAND WITH ANCIENT TIES
Nestled right in the heart of the popular NuLu neighborhood is a relaxing and memorable getaway that tourists and locals can both enjoy!
PAIRE Hospitality is built on the concept of “philoxenia”, a Greek word which loosely translates as “hospitality”.
“The ancient word is much more far-reaching and is based on a culture that considers kindness toward the stranger or traveler as a moral code,” explains Jaclyn Journey, co-owner of PAIRE. “Both of us grew up with, or married into families with roots in Greece, Russia, Lebanon, and Syria, and we have experienced hospitality as a natural thread woven throughout our lives. We wanted to bring that emphasis, mixed with a well-designed and thoughtful atmosphere, to our concept.”
A LUXURY BOUTIQUE
While PAIRE Hospitality also includes two luxurious Airbnb’s, shopPAIRE is an intentionally curated luxury boutique, filled with an array of goods that promote wellbeing and beauty, evoking feelings of peace and contentment. They even have a custom line of goods such as rose body oil, bath tea, and candles as well as a wide variety of apparel, curated art, and other beautiful things to fill the home. “We know the more we surround ourselves with beauty, the more we are reminded how worthy we are of it,” Jaclyn says.
PERSONAL TOUCHES
To go along with the experience of “philoxenia”, many of the products in the shop are ones Jaclyn and co-owner Amanda have found while traveling or that they have custom created because they use them at home. To sum it up: “Everything is very personal!” Jaclyn says.
So add a touch of luxury to your daily routine and stop by PAIRE soon!

]]>A NULU NEIGHBORHOOD OG
Get ready to meet an OG NuLu business! That’s right, Zephyr Gallery has been in NuLu before the neighborhood even had its funky, blended name.
Zephyr was established 35 years ago, making it one of the oldest art venues in Louisville. After moving around a bit, they settled on their current location on E. Market back in 1997.
AN ART GALLERY BY + FOR ARTISTS
The artists who formed Zephyr were on a mission to create an art gallery run by Kentucky visual artists for Kentucky regional visual artists, and they’re still living out that mission today!
Zephyr even started a corporate art program to encourage local businesses to create art collections. They lend the businesses art of their choosing and Zephyr goes into their spaces to display it. The program is still in effect today and provides art to several prominent corporations here in Louisville.
Zephyr is known for their collection of original paintings, photography, and drawings by Kentucky regional artists, so if you have a passion for art and love supporting local artists, head to Zephyr Gallery and find a piece that speaks to you.

]]>AESTHETICS THAT CLIQUE
Are you looking for a beauty boutique where everything just…clicks? A place where you’re greeted by a professional concierge team, that has a team of the best estheticians, and that performs an exceptional service with no shortcuts? Look no further! Clique Boutique is the perfect place for you.
Clique’s owner, Janna, has always had a passion for aesthetics, teaching proper skincare treatments, and creating the perfect brow. When she saw the need to really focus on those services rather than making them “add-on” services, she resigned from her job and started Clique the following week.
TAKING THE CLIQUE EXPERIENCE HOME
Along with their amazing services, be sure to check out their Clique Beauty skincare line which ranges from basic skincare like cleansers, moisturizers and toners, to more advanced treatments like serums and restorative treatments. You definitely want to make sure to grab some product so you can bring the Clique experience home with you. We recommend trying the Creme Cleanser. It leaves the skin hydrated and soft with none of that tightness you get with other cleansers. Plus it smells so fresh!
Clique is the perfect place for you to set aside a little me-time. They even have three convenient locations here in Louisville: Frankfort Ave, Holiday Manor Center, and of course, here in NuLu where they’ll be having a grand re-opening this summer.

]]>THE GO-TO DERBY HAT BOUTIQUE
Jenny Pfanenstiel, is the official Derby milliner for Derby 146, 147, and 148, and she is still crafting stunning handmade hats for all seasons and occasions with her business, Formé Millinery Co.
Jenny’s hats are unique and carefully crafted to perfection using a 100-year-old technique called “blocking,” which involves molding millinery material over forms to create each hat. She also uses a braid machine from the 19th century, a technique that allows her to stay in touch with authentic millinery methods. “I enjoy using traditional techniques to create my work, because I believe the people who made the forms, or the people who once made a hat on the forms, speak through the making of each hat,” Jenny says.
The careful technique and high quality materials Jenny uses to perfect her handmade hats are what keep her customers coming back, year after year. “Thank you, thank you, thank you for making my haute couture dreams come true," one customer wrote on Formé’s website.
AN UNFORGETTABLE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
It’s also easy to see the other reason Jenny’s customers fall in love with Formé: the relationships she forms with her customers. The testimonials on the Formé website echo an appreciation for Jenny that goes beyond her hat-making abilities. “I wanted to thank you so much for the beautiful fascinator you made for me for the Oaks,” wrote Erica from Louisville. “My absolute favorite part was the addition of my grandmother's jewelry.”
That personal touch is unique to small businesses like Jenny’s, as well as the other locally-owned shops spread around NuLu. When you purchase handcrafted goods from a local business like Formé, you’re supporting a local artisan whose priority is to make sure you’re completely in love with your purchase. You’re also supporting someone who has turned their passion into a career, just like Jenny did. “I started my hat business in my basement in Chicago as a hobby,” Jenny says. “I used to showcase my hats at fine art shows across the country and people really seemed to like them. I quit my corporate job and started to make hats full time.”
The millinery is open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are also available for appointments and online consultations.

A FIERCELY FEMINIST GIFT SHOP
Pink is the color of love, friendship, and femininity, and it’s also the color of the prettiest shop in town! The Woman-Owned Wallet feminist gift shop’s pretty pink walls provide the ultimate welcoming experience for every fierce feminist. “We feature over 40 woman-owned brands in the shop!” says owner, Amanda Dare. “We have a constantly changing aray of options for you to check out and get that sassy feminist gift. Other shops have some of what we have, but you can't find any store like WOW. Full-out feminist vibes all the time!"
WOMEN SUPPORTING WOMEN
If you love woman-owned businesses but have trouble finding them on your own, WOW did all the work for you. The gorgeous gift shop exclusively features woman-owned brands that are sassy, bold, and fearlessly feminist! But the shop is more than just a fun place to pick up your favorite feminist goodies: it’s also the headquarters for the Woman-Owned Wallet Tour, a NuLu walking tour that introduces shoppers to all of the amazing woman-owned businesses the neighborhood has to offer. “When I moved into the neighborhood, I knew there were a lot of women-owned businesses,” Amanda says. “When I learned that there were over 35 woman-owned businesses, I was shocked that there wasn't a way to visit them all or even a directory or story about how NuLu has become a woman-owned business haven.”
With that knowledge in mind, Amanda set out to create the first woman-owned business walking tour in Louisville! “I decided that since I was already known for selling exclusively woman-owned products and empowering women through my fashion brand, The New Blak, that I would be a good organizer for a walking tour, and I worked with graphic designers to make the first WOW map.”
A SHOP BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN
But just after the WOW map launched, so did COVID-related shutdowns. When Amanda noticed her fellow women-owned businesses struggling, she decided the WOW map alone wouldn’t be enough to help sustain them. “So I rented a space in the center of NuLu to help spread the word about the women-owned businesses in the area,” Amanda says. “I decided to open a gift shop where customers could shop exclusively from woman-owned independent artists and brands. Customers love knowing that when they shop with WOW their money goes directly to the wallet of a woman.”
Along with the mission of supporting woman artists and entrepreneurs, customers also love that they can connect with Amanda as well as other woman shoppers. “I love to see friends bring other friends into the shop!” says Amanda. “It’s like Galentine's Day every day!”

PERFECTING THE CRAFT OF HAIRSTYLING
Wait! Don’t touch that boxed hair dye! Whew, that was a close one. With all the new ways to add color to your hair, it can be tempting to add a touch of flair all by yourself. But if you’re looking for hair as radiant and glossy as diamonds, the solution is obvious: it’s Cobalt. Cobalt Hair Lab, that is. “We are fanatics about perfecting our craft through continuous education and training that is second to none,” says Cobalt co-owner, Lisa Warren. “We're dedicated to building a strong team of creative stylists to serve our clients and our community.”
That dedication to the craft means that Cobalt is the perfect place to get a fresh new haircut along with a gorgeous color. The stylists at Cobalt know how to bring out the best in your hair, leaving it shining and flawless. “Expert transformation specialists!” wrote one satisfied customer. “Lisa Warren and crew really know their stuff. I’m thrilled with my cut and color.” That cheerful review is just one of nearly 40 positive testimonials left by delighted Cobalt customers on Google.
Those customers are also an incredible source of inspiration for Lisa and her Cobalt co-owner, Stephanie Barker. “We have so many awesome clients that live in the neighborhood as well as ones who pop in to say ‘hi,’” Lisa says. “We would be nothing without them.”
SUSTAINABLE HAIR CARE
With wonderful neighbors comes an equally wonderful neighborhood, and because Cobalt uses environmentally friendly hair products, they fit in perfectly with NuLu’s emphasis on sustainability. “We truly belong here!” Lisa says of the Louisville hotspot.
Cobalt’s Eufora hair products offer “beauty without compromise.” Because products made by Eufora are naturally derived, botanically driven, and ingredient conscious, they deliver stunning, lustrous results with minimal impact on the environment. “We practice green initiatives wherever we can to minimize our impact and embrace our responsibility as environmental stewards,” says Lisa.
A HAIR SALON WITH HEART
Other than the stunning results their stylists deliver, there’s another reason their clients love Cobalt. Customer reviews gush about Cobalt’s “great atmosphere” and “super chic environment.” With a stunning interior and warm lighting, it’s easy to see why customers feel so welcomed by Cobalt’s atmosphere. “People come in and tell us what great energy our space has or how inviting it is,” Lisa says, calling the atmosphere one of her greatest achievements as a business owner.

THE WEST COAST MEETS THE BLUEGRASS STATE
Cocktails, cauliflower, and nachos: It’s not a combination you’d expect to see every day, but then again, Naive isn’t the type of restaurant you’d expect to find in Louisville at all. That’s because Catherine MacDowell created Naive “to fill a void” in Louisville. “I wanted to bring the west coast to Kentucky, creating a healthy-ish restaurant, filled with produce inspired dishes and great atmosphere,” Catherine says.
Even though Naive might seem a bit out of place in a city like Louisville, it’s right at home in the NuLu neighborhood where “big city vibes” combine with a “sense of community” to form the perfect neighborhood for small and local businesses.
With innovative dishes and unique cocktails made from fresh and local ingredients, Naive’s indulgent but “healthy-ish” menu is the perfect fit for the culture of NuLu. “We’re a fun and vibrant restaurant turned bar at night. A place to connect. With others, and with what we eat,” Catherine says.
THINK OUTSIDE THE KITCHEN
Naive isn’t just a modern eatery with incredible cocktails and a unique menu. It’s also a space that provides customers with the opportunity to think about the food they eat and the role it plays in their lives beyond nourishment. “We see the world as a place of hope,” Catherine says. “Maybe that’s naive. But maybe it’s one of our greatest strengths. Because we’re not afraid to think big, without any preconceived notions. With a connection to what’s real, from the food we eat to the relationships we nourish.”

A BOUTIQUE WITH FAMILY TIES
Katie Meinhart with Six Sisters Boutique is taking the phrase “strength in sisterhood” to the next level. “The name comes from the most awesome family ever,” Kate says. “As one of six sisters born and raised in Louisville, KY by two amazing parents, I've become the woman I am today because of my five sisters. The store reflects our personalities, our city and of course our fashion and style.
Those six beautiful personalities came together to inspire an incredible boutique where you can find stylish yet affordable clothing, accessories, shoes, home decor, and more! “We go the extra mile to make sure that while looks are still on trend, they are also functional for strong, independent women no matter where life takes them,” Kate says. “Beauty shouldn't be pain, and clothes should feel good. That's something we truly believe in!
FROM THE GROUND UP
That belief in her business has taken Kate far! Six Sisters began in 2017 and has quickly blossomed into a thriving and beloved boutique that even earned a mention in the New York Times’ Kentucky Derby-themed article, “Five Places to Go in Louisville.”
Despite Kate’s success, she has never allowed Six Sisters to lose the feeling of family and home that inspired the boutique. “My oldest niece is 15 and my youngest niece is 7 and showing them what can be built and sustained, what they can do and be proud of, is something that keeps me going each day,” Kate says. “I love having them in the store to greet customers or help ticket items. It keeps us honest and humble.”
We thrive on a community of women who support women. And while we have loving men as our biggest cheerleaders, it's the community of women we greet every day at Six Sisters Boutique that makes this journey worth the ride!"
NULU HOSPITALITY
That family-owned business vibe is a perfect fit for the NuLu Neighborhood. “Myself, along with the input of my five sisters and my wonderful staff, love to bring great fashion, accessories and fun gifts to the city of Louisville and create a shopping experience that NuLu has truly been missing,” Kate says.
Six Sisters truly is a shopping experience that goes beyond a regular boutique. "Everyday I tell people that we get to shop and play dress up for our jobs; and what could be better than that?” Kate says. “We thrive on a community of women who support women. And while we have loving men as our biggest cheerleaders, it's the community of women we greet every day at Six Sisters Boutique that makes this journey worth the ride!”
“I hope you find yourself feeling at home at Six Sisters and throughout the NULU area,” Kate says. “Everyone here at Six Sisters can't wait to show both locals and visitors alike how much fun shopping truly can be. Cheers to shopping local in Louisville!”

RICH, ETHICAL ROOTS
If you’ve ever visited Graymarket Design, you know their products are much brighter and more colorful than the name implies. “I started Graymarket in 2013 after studying textile design and becoming fascinated with the handcrafted textiles I encountered on travels throughout India,” says Graymarket owner, Hallie Gray. “I am inspired by a minimal aesthetic, rich color stories grounded in neutrals, and the beautiful imperfections inherent in hand-crafted textile traditions.”
With richly colored fabric in shades like mustard, indigo, and olive, the beautiful accessories and homeware products sold at Graymarket are still versatile enough to match with any outfit or home decor. Because part of ethical fashion means creating pieces that can be worn and used for years to come, Graymarket’s products, including their popular scarves, robes, and quilts, are all designed to be modern, casual and high quality. “It's crazy how many hands and how much time goes into our products,” Hallie says.
NO GRAY AREAS
That time is definitely well-spent and that commitment to ethical fashion is just one of the many qualities that make Graymarket so special. The popular and beloved NuLu shop refuses to occupy that “gray” area between ethically made clothing and sweatshops. “We collaborate with a team of artisans in Jaipur, India, to have our original, hand-drawn designs printed in small batches, and work very closely with our team there throughout the year to develop fresh and beautiful products for your life and home,” Hallie says. “Our products are handcrafted with non-toxic dyes, and our collaboration with our workshop in India is helping to keep a traditional textile technique relevant today.”
SMALL SHOP, BIG DREAMS
After a successful six years in business, Hallie is looking forward to the next six years at Graymarket and what they may hold. Despite COVID temporarily closing her doors in 2020, Hallie still has big dreams for her small business. “We're excited to introduce new products, start a textile recycling program, and build our zero waste program,” Hallie says. “If I can keep my business going through COVID while being a full time stay at home mom, that will be our greatest achievement as a business!”
You can find a full selection of their available products in store or on their website! Plus, Hallie offers weekly flash sales through the Graymarket newsletter, so be sure to head to their website to sign up for emails!

]]>One look at Hi-Five Doughnuts’ diverse and delectable menu is enough to make any customer “glaze” over in shock. With countless delicious options, including customizable donuts, it can be difficult to decide what to order. From shiny pink strawberry glaze to crunchy and colorful toppings like Fruity Pebbles and Rainbow “Sprankles,” Hi-Five has “dozens” of options to choose from.
Hi-Five has been one of the most popular doughnut shops in Louisville for years now, so you’d probably be surprised to learn that both of its co-owners were far from the baking experts you’d expect them to be. “Neither one of us had any baking experience,” says Hi-Five co-owner, Leslie Wilson. “We got a recipe for dough and basic glaze, and off we went. Over the years we have tweaked it to what is now our signature glazes and ‘brioche’ style dough.”
FUN TOPPINGS + RAVING REVIEWS
Despite not having much baking experience at first, Leslie and her co-owner Annie Harlow have clearly found success with their gourmet doughnut business where all of their delicious treats are baked from scratch. With nearly 400 Google reviews and featured segments on national television, it’s obvious that Hi-Five has found booming success from customers all over the country. “Mind-blowing, game-changing donuts,” wrote one customer on Google. “The donuts are huge, and the donut breakfast sandwiches are EVEN BIGGER. They have a variety of flavors and change it up frequently, and they're all. so. good.”
A LOUISVILLE FAVORITE WITH A HUMBLE START
With all that success, it’s hard to believe Leslie and Annie started their doughnut business with just $120 and a tent at the local Flea off Market. However, the dynamic duo achieved that success through a lot of hard work and dedication. “We worked really hard and eventually bought a food truck,” Leslie says. “We hustled another two years, then got our storefront.”
Even though they’ve achieved resounding success, Leslie, Annie, and the other employees at their shop still bring that dedication and work ethic to their business every day. “We work really hard,” Leslie says. “Our customers see us there everyday, and they appreciate that. They appreciate that we care about making them happy, and feeding them the best products we can make.”

Ready for a road trip? They’re only the best kind of vacation! And when you stop by Hazel + Hunt, you can get all the best elements of an Americana road trip right here in NuLu!
It isn’t surprising that Hazel + Hunt is filled with nostalgic, road tripping vibes since that’s how the business was dreamed up in the first place! “We started Hazel + Hunt in 2017, while on a cross country road trip,” says co-owner Candice Hunt. “We were on the last leg of our adventure, just outside of Glacier National Park when we decided that we had dreamed about opening a business for long enough. So, we stopped at a coffee shop and spent the day creating our first two designs.”
Candice and her husband, Kris, returned from their trip just two weeks later, and spent the weekend selling their new products at the Flea Off Market. Now you can find them at their own bright and beautiful shop in the NuLu Marketplace!
HOMETOWN HERITAGE
Whether you’re a Louisville native or a tourist, you’ll fall in love with Hazel + Hunt’s incorporation of historical Kentucky elements into their products and decor. “We draw inspiration from the unique dynamics of our city,” Candice says. “A place where small-town Kentucky and the rest of the world collides in an interesting mix of food, culture, and creativity. Such a beautiful place deserves a brand that represents it well.”
HAND PRINTED WITH HEART
From comfy t-shirts and hoodies (that Hazel + Hunt screen prints themselves), to hats, stickers, and even stationary, everyone can find something to love at this serene shop. “We have built our brand on the basics of creating original graphic designs and then printing on high quality apparel,” Candice says. “We make our products with careful attention to detail from the earliest stages of brainstorming and creating artwork, all the way to the final in-house printing process. People love our shirts because of the super soft material and the perfectly tailored, true to size fit.”

Ethical and sustainable products are the way of the future, but you don’t have to be an established eco-queen to be smart about the products you’re using! You can easily incorporate ethical and sustainable alternatives into your everyday life, and Peace of the Earth is here to help you on your journey! “When you shop at Peace of the Earth, your purchase has a direct impact on the lives of artisans in developing countries,” says Leslie Delgado, owner of Peace of the Earth. “We have every type of gift imaginable including jewelry, home decor, children's items, chocolate, teas, and more— and everything is eco-friendly!”
FROM SOAPS TO AN ECO-FRIENDLY MARKETPLACE
If you’ve ever popped into Peace of the Earth, you probably remember them for their sweet-smelling shop. That’s because they hand make their amazing bath and body products in-store! “Everyone who walks in our door says that it is literally the best smelling place they have ever been,” Leslie says. “It is worth coming by just for a sniff!”
Leslie picked up her talent for making bath and body products after working as a baker for several years. “I decided to combine my love of mixing things with my passion for sustainability and began making natural artisanal soaps from my home in 2006,” Leslie says. “Over time, I began selling a full line of earth-friendly bath and body products at local art fairs and grocery stores. In 2011, I opened a retail storefront on Market Street in Nulu. Since then, I have expanded to include other handmade, eco-friendly, and fair trade items that compliment our product line and share our mission.”
A SHOP THAT WALKS THE WALK
When you switch out your everyday, single-use items for more sustainable options, you’re making a choice that will have a profoundly positive impact on the environment. But Peace of the Earth doesn’t just provide sustainable products, they also promote ethical consumption by supporting fair wages and safe working environments for all artisans across the globe, regardless of their nationality, race, sexual orientation, religion, or gender. “Every product that we carry has a story behind it,” says Leslie. “Find one that speaks to your heart.”

WOMEN IN THE BUSINESS OF CANDY
You’ve probably heard of the “candy man”, but Muth’s Candies has always been owned and operated by a family of incredible candy women. “Muth’s was actually started by my great aunt and uncle in 1921,” says Martha Bennett Vories, the current owner of Muth’s. “My great uncle passed in the early 1950’s, and my grandmother and great aunt ran the business together for about 30 years. Then my grandmother ran the business with my mother until the mid 1990’s when it was then turned over to me.”
With that incredible legacy of women business owners, it’s no surprise Muth’s is still thriving nearly a century after it opened. “Our biggest achievement is simply lasting well into the fourth generation all while being run by female owners and primarily a female staff,” Martha says. “Statistically, only very few family businesses make it to this point, and I am very proud that I have kept the tradition going and the store is able to provide a future for my children.”
KENTUCKY CANDY FAVORITES
The other secret to Muth’s longevity is its delicious, handmade candies. With delectable treats like Old Fashion Kentucky Bourbons and Muth's Modjeskas as well as unique novelty treats like horseshoe shaped chocolates, Muth’s has become a classic Louisville staple. During the popular Easter and Christmas seasons, you’ll find even more novelty candies and delicious treats available in the shop. “Christmas and Easter are magical times of year around here, and if you asked any of our generational customers they would tell you the same,” Martha says.
A RICH NULU HISTORY
Muth’s existed long before NuLu was the booming local business hub it is today, but it’s still the perfect fit for the unique and thriving community. “We are very proud to be turning 100 years old soon all while being on East Market Street and still using almost all original equipment,” Martha says. “Nulu is a community of makers, and I truly enjoy being surrounded by a collection of businesses that are all so unique and have great pride in what they make as well as their contributions to the community.”
CANDY IS LOVE
It may seem cliché to say the secret to Muth’s unforgettable candies is love, but when you shop any small, family-owned business, the product will always be better because of the love and dedication put into it. “My grandmother always said she wanted the store to be a place where the staff was like family and the customers were friends, and I feel that I have striven for nothing less since the business was left in my hands”, Martha says.
You can feel that love and dedication to family values the moment you catch a glimpse of Muth’s vintage storefront. The classic shop is an unchanging reminder of the power and persistence of honest and loving family businesses.

PLANT LADIES
Have you heard that “plant ladies” are the new “cat ladies?” Whether your latest obsession is plants or you’re practically a botanist, Mahonia’s collection of carefully curated and artfully designed flowers, plants, and terrariums can help you find #peacethruplants!
“At Mahonia, our mission is to celebrate nature, make beauty accessible and create an inspired, extraordinary customer experience through our design, environment and service,” says owner Bridget Davis. But that extraordinary customer experience doesn’t stop when you leave the shop. Mahonia’s ethereal flower arrangements and tranquil terrariums will bring you joy and peace every time you see them in your home or office.
“Plants make people feel good! They beautify spaces and clean the air,” Bridget says.
A GREEN OASIS
Just as their plants can brighten up any space, Mahonia has been brightening up the NuLu neighborhood with its warm and soothing plant-filled storefront since 2016. The shop is a welcoming oasis that’s right-at-home in Louisville’s haven for local businesses. “We love that NuLu is made up of small, independent businesses,” Bridget says. “There is a friendly, supportive vibe here, and we love our neighbors.”
MORE THAN A PLANT SHOP
Though Mahonia began as a tiny floral and home boutique, it has since blossomed into a stunning sanctuary thanks to the support of the local community as well as Mahonia’s dedicated employees. “We are proud to be a woman-owned business,” Bridget says. “We believe in making feel-good, beautiful products accessible to all.” That mission has earned Mahonia a loyal fanbase, and it’s easy to see why customers keep returning to the beautiful and soothing environment filled with its high quality, unique, and gorgeous products.
Mahonia offers fresh cut flowers, available by the stem, and their team also offers tailored floral arrangements and a selection of indoor plants. But if you’re feeling especially creative, you can visit their Build Your Own Terrarium Bar where the staff encourages you to create your own botanical masterpiece. If you’re having trouble finding inspiration, Mahonia also offers floral design classes where you can craft your own arrangement (with a little help from your friends).

SMALL BUSINESS, BIG IMPACT
Revelry Boutique may be local to Louisville, but there’s nothing small about this small business! In fact, Revelry owner, Mo McKnight Howe, wrote over $500,000 worth of checks to local artists last year alone. “When you purchase something from Revelry, 100% is going back into our local economy - you are supporting both a small business and a local artist,” Mo says.
When you walk into Revelry, you’re surrounded by beautiful and unique products that are made right here in Louisville. That means when you purchase something from Revelry, like one of their iconic dinosaur succulents or a fun spiral chandelier, your money will always go back to local artists. “Our products are handmade, local, and awesome!” says Mo. “If you buy one of our products, you are supporting someone in our community.”
ARTISTS OF ALL SIZES
When Mo struggled to find a gallery that would feature her art because she wasn’t “established” enough, she decided she would open her own gallery for emerging artists that exclusively featured locally-made products. While some shops feature a mixture of local and mass-produced items, everything at Revelry is local and unique. “There was a tremendous need in the community for places to show and support local artists, without mixing them in with ‘made in China’ inventory,” Mo says. Have we established that Revelry is all about locally-made products? Good, because that’s what makes the boutique a perfect fit for NuLu! “The ever-changing landscape of Nulu has been incredible to watch and be a part of over the past 6 years.” Mo says. “What I love most about Nulu though is that it has the highest concentration of small businesses in the city. Keep Nulu local!”
ART ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL
The welcoming environment of Revelry also makes it the perfect place to find your new favorite work of art. “Revelry's mission is to support Kentucky's creative economy and to keep art accessible for all,” Mo says. Everyone from casual admirers to art connoisseurs can come together at Revelry where the art-buying experience is made fun and comfortable!
With such a large community of artists, there’s always a reason to visit Revelry! Whether it’s a painting of your favorite celebrity or a stunning handblown drinking glass, Revelry has something for everybody. “We are constantly keeping things fresh in the store,” Mo says. “We work with each one of our 150 artists to ensure that products are going to be successful. Every time you come to Revelry or our website, there is something new. We work very hard on that!”

A COMMUNITY CO-WORKING SPACE
At the heart of the woman-owned business boom in NuLu is Story Louisville, a fellow woman-owned business that provides a dedicated community workspace for local entrepreneurs to flourish. “Story is more than just a network of physical spaces, we are a community fostering the growth of start-ups and innovators,” says Story’s Director of Operations, Lauren VanCleave. “We are a place for local artists, creatives and entrepreneurs who are tired of feeling isolated and working from the same ol’ coffee shops. We have built an awesome space for them to enjoy the community, get work done, and collaborate on amazing projects with each other while making it feel like a day at camp!”
CREATIVE MINDS THINK ALIKE
That “day at camp” vibe is a large part of what has drawn so many entrepreneurs and artists to Story. “I love being able to have a place to do my daily work while amongst other talented creatives in the community,” wrote one reviewer. “I particularly love that this amazing group is all about education and community over competition. I feel so lucky to be a part of such a wonderful group. I can't wait to see what collaborations flourish here at Story!”
ALL THE BELLS + WHISTLES
Story offers three membership options that include exciting perks like high speed WiFi, free local coffee, access to meeting room and event space, membership mixers, 24/7 access to all 3 locations, a business mailbox at the NuLu location, and more! With these amazing perks and a gorgeous, bright workspace, you’ll have your creative juices flowing in no time. “Because there is so much talent in our city, it can be really hard to differentiate ourselves from the ‘pack’ to our clients,” says Story founder, Natalia Bishop. “I believe a kickass brick and mortar space can help creatives wow their clients and inspire their work.”
AT HOME IN NULU
With all of that creative energy and inspiration, it’s only natural that Story found its home in NuLu, one of the most visionary neighborhoods in Louisville. “NuLu is a close knit community that not only enjoys what they do but also thrives while helping each other,” says VanCleave. “NuLu inspires passionate, innovative, creative work, and more importantly, collaboration within a design-savvy community of entrepreneurs, makers, do-ers, and dreamers.”

BROWS, NAILS, AND BEAUTY, OH MY!
Happiness is a fresh manicure, perfect brows, and a warm neck wrap...and you can find all of that at Dollface Brows & Beauty! For three and a half years, owner Jess Harrison and her team at Dollface have been providing exceptional beauty services to clients in New York and Louisville! “Once I started school I fell in love with waxing, and brows became a passion,” Jess says. “As a makeup artist, I was always drawn to instant gratification services and built for speed beauty.”
A SELF-CARE EXPERIENCE
If you’re looking for a way to practice some self-care, chances are Dollface has it! From brows to nails and everything in between, you can find your favorite form of self-care right here in NuLu! “Coming here to get your eyebrows or nails done isn't just about the ritual of having to get it done. It's about the experience,” wrote one customer in a Google review. “Coming here is usually the best part of my week. It's like a girls club for adults that you dreamed of as a little kid.”
That “girls club” vibe comes from Jess’s goal to make Dollface an empowering and welcoming haven for everyone who walks through the door. “You are welcome here,” Jess says. “You will leave happier than when you arrived. Grooming has never been so much fun!”
BEAUTY FROM THE INSIDE OUT
Dollface aims to enhance their customers’ inherent beauty, helping them feel empowered and beautiful in their own skin. “We try to create an environment where people feel that they can be unapologetically themselves and, at the same time, provide consistent and creative services to boot,” Jess says. “We all love what we do, and I think people can feel that in the studio and see that in our work.”
And if you’re looking for that Dollface glow every day, you can take home Dollface’s Hiya! Beauty products like their universal eyebrow pencil, clear grooming gel, and dual-sided highlighting pencil. “Our products are clean, cohesive and minimal,” says Jess. “They’re built to work in conjunction with each other and our core services for flawless results with minimal time tacked onto your morning routine!”
BRINGING THE BIG CITY TO NULU
It might be surprising to hear that Jess runs another salon in New York City, but with its big city vibes and surplus of small businesses, the NuLu neighborhood is the perfect home for Dollface. “Every day that I step outside and look around at how many wonderful, thriving, small businesses surround me (SO MANY WOMAN-OWNED), I am filled with energy again and again,” Jess says.

]]>THE NEW WORKLEISURE
Amanda Dare’s shop may have a monochromatic theme, but her personality is colorful enough to light up all of NuLu. The passionate fashion designer and owner of The New Blak incorporates that vivacious and bubbly charisma into every aspect of her business. Including also being the owner of the Woman- Owned Wallet and WOW Tour!
When Amanda first entered the fashion industry as a manager in fast fashion establishments, she was disheartened by the waste and the abuse she witnessed. “I learned about the environmental and human degradation that happens in the fast fashion world,” Amanda says. “I wanted to be a part of the fashion industry, but I didn’t want to do it in the same way that fashion companies have been doing it.”
ETHICAL + SUSTAINABLE FASHION
Amanda knew there had to be a more sustainable, ethical way to produce garments that didn’t rely on the exploitation of seamstresses or the environment, but she isn’t the type of person to wait for someone else to come up with a solution. So, she did it herself. “I was working in fast fashion as part of this cycle that disgusted me,” Amanda says. “So eventually, I decided to leave and to just fully dive deep into the New Blak. And I’m so glad I did.”
TRANSPARENCY IS KEY
At The New Blak, Amanda offers a radically transparent look into her production process. Most retailers are hesitant to admit who made the clothes they sell, but from the minute you walk into The New Blak, you know exactly who made your clothes. That’s because The New Blak doubles as a shopping lounge and a sewing studio, meaning that while you shop, you can actually watch seamstresses like Amanda sew the garments that are sold there. “We hand cut every single one of the pieces that go out to you, and we sew them in our studio as well,” Amanda says. “No matter what, you’re going to be interacting with your clothing every single time you come by. It’s a more interactive experience where you can have a deeper connection with your clothing and the women here in Louisville that make your clothing.”
A SISTERHOOD IN FASHION
Women flock to The New Blak for the promise of fashionable and flattering clothes that are also ethically and sustainably made. Fashion you can feel good about is addictive, but there’s another reason customers keep coming back- a very vivacious and bubbly reason. “Amanda is a fierce advocate for the women who work with her, her customers, and every woman she encounters,” one customer wrote in a review. “She uplifts everyone she comes into contact with and makes you feel beautiful and empowered.”
You can see that empowerment in action every time a member of Amanda’s girl gang walks into the shop. It’s not a business owner greeting a customer - it’s a sisterhood in the works.
